Week 79: November 27, 2017:I literally could not have asked for a better way to finish my mission

I’m not really sure how to sum up the best 18 months of my life into this email...So I will begin with a report of the last 2 weeks haha 

Well, in the last 8 days we went on exchanges with 4 different companionship’s so it was all kinda a blur but literally was so awesome as well! I always love going on exchanges because it is an opportunity to get to know the sisters better and help them on an individual basis but literally there are ALWAYS exchange miracles! Because I know that this is already going to be a novel, I don’t want to drag it on too long so I wont get into specifics but it was a great week! 

But we stopped by A’s this week and she really wants to learn! So does S!
M is still doing so great! Although she is still really struggling with going to church...
Sometimes it is very humbling to remember how patient the Lord must be with me because I know I can get frustrated with people don’t keep commitments...when I know very well that I am not perfect either. I am so grateful for his patience with me. 

We had a GREAT thanksgiving! We had dinner with the Strubs, Halls, Weiperts, and Taylors (don’t worry-all together in one dinner) but we did also go have dinner with our investigator Amanda Nelson and it was SO GOOD! Her husband (Jason) went to culinary school and literally it all tasted delicious. We still have leftovers and I had it again today for lunch haha plus he is making us this dang good turkey soup with everything that was left and is going to give us a huge pot to take home. I’m so excited. 

I literally could not have asked for a better way to finish my mission tho. I was blessed to see 3 people that I LOVE enter the waters of baptism. It started off with Vickie (from Liberty 1st ward) and can I just say how much I love her. She is the sweetest lady on the face of the earth and I feel so blessed to have gotten to know her. Her son was able to fly into Missouri to baptize her and it was so special. I just remember having lessons with her and she was SEARCHING to know what was true. She had been praying and praying and felt like nothing was coming. One lesson, I felt like I needed to tell her that she already knew! It was a little crazy but the spirit confirmed to her and she said “you're right...I do!” :) and then it was just a matter of waiting for her son to fly out! 

We had Onna’s baptism right after and that was a special experience. Like 2 months ago, we walked out of the Barkers home and felt like we needed to knock the door across the street. We did and Onna opened the door! Since then she has quickly accepted everything and has been a great example to me of being willing to act. We (hopefully) should be able to go to the temple with her this week do get baptized for her mom! She amazes me!

The third baptism was that evening, Linda got baptized in the Crooked River ward! I obviously didn’t serve in that ward but one of the blessings about serving in the visitor venter and jail is that many missionaries bring in their investigators and thats how I met Linda! She had been taught for years and was always back and forth. We had a great conversation during the tour and the spirit was strong. Sister Bench actually served in Crooked River and taught her and since we both knew her, we drove out with a member and got to see her get baptized! 

Unfortunately Vickies baptism was right during the time that Steve was getting baptized in our ward (the elders taught him) so I technically didn’t see him get baptized. If I had gotten to, that would have been 4 baptisms in one day. And I know that God is so proud of all of them! I know that this is the work of our Savior Jesus Christ and that none of this would have happened without him! I am grateful for people who are wiling to act on their faith and search for the truth. I had little idea coming out on my mission, how much this choice would bless my life!

I thank my Father in Heaven each and every day for this sacred and special opportunity that I have had to serve as a full time missionary. I have seen His hand in my life each day and I know that He is so intricately involved in each and every one of our lives. 

I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be able to wear the Saviors name on my heart and testify of him by his authority daily. I know this work is real. The experiences I have had as a missionary and the people Ive met have helped me to know that God is real. I know this is the Lord's church None of us are perfect, but His doctrine is. And the power is there to change us and to help us become like Him. It was restored through Jospeh Smith. And the Book of Mormon is the word of God. Ive come to know what it really feels like to “feast” upon the words of Christ- and its seriously the best ❤️ 

I know my mission isn’t the end and that everything I have learned as a missionary will only continue to help me and I strive to become as He is. 

I love you all lots and am so grateful for all the love and support each of you have shown me.

Week 78 November 22, 2017: I ATE RACCOON!

Today is my pday!! We went to the temple this morning. I’ll try and send out emails but we are doing service for our investigator right now. 

I know! It is really weird that I only have one Monday left... 

My mission is going really well! We have been SUPER busy-which is awesome because then I am able to just keep working hard until the end of my mission and I have like no time to think about going home. Onna is still getting baptized this weekend and I have a baptism that I am going back to Liberty for on Saturday as well so I am SO EXCITED!

We have plans to eat with some members at 3:00 on Thanksgivng and we may be going over to our investigators house for dessert or something and we have to meet up for exchanges on Friday and the sister live like an hour away and we have had lots of other people offer. Oh and we might be going to the plaza to see them light it up with Christmas lights with some of our members. Plus we heard there will be like thousands of people there so lots of missionary work to do lol 

I love you lots! I will probably write about my past 2 weeks on Monday because I only had like 30 min to email today due to the temple and service with an investigator. One of our investigators is struggling with food and couldn’t provide a Thanksgiving so we posted on the ward FaceBook page about it and lots of members offered to donate some food so we went and picked all that up and took it over to her! Its like a whole new world over here from what we always had growing up. Thanks so much for all you and dad do!

Week 77: November 13, 2017: BED BUGS

I can’t believe its Monday again! Time is flying by...

This week was so good! It started out with a HUGE MIRACLE. About a week and a half ago, we had a lesson with her where she told us that she so badly wants to be baptized but that she didn’t think she could quit smoking. Then, a couple days later, Sister Bench and Sister Sly went back (we were on exchanges) and M told them that right after she told us she couldn’t quit smoking, she got the biggest headache. She said that it was absolutely awful and she told God that if he took the headache away, she would quit smoking. And guess what- the headache left and she hasn’t smoked in a WEEK!!! God is so good.

Ya so that was on Tuesday and I was in Sedalia, MO on exchanges with Sister Pyne who was actually in my summer ward at BYU-small world! We weren’t really friends but we had seen each other around. We had a really good exchange!! She is so awesome.

Wednesday we had zone conference!! One of my favorite things was when President Hancock (in the mission presidency) was talking about obedience and how the laws of the gospel are principles with promise. He said that when we are obedient, we are are “offering” rocks up to God and he promises to bless us. He said “Don’t let the powers of heaven slip through your hands because of disobedience”. He related it to Ether 2 and 3 with the Brother of Jared. It was super good.

On Thursday we got a call early in the morning from a member that wanted us to come and help her vacuum her bed and flip it because it was a job too heavy for her to do. Welllll we get there and find out the real reason she wanted us to vacuum her bed...it is infested with bed bugs and she thought that just vacuuming them up would do the think. LOL NOPE. So once we realized she had them we told her that we couldn’t keep vacuuming because we visit too many people and can’t give them to anyone. But we still took precautionary measures and doused EVERYTHING in permethrin. It was a rough experience but definitely one for the mems haha

Our investigators are doing really well! O was supposed to be baptized this Saturday but with Stake conference this weekend and because of some other things, we are thinking that we may push her date back to the 25th. But she is doing great! She is keeping all of her commitments and is so excited to be baptized! She and her fiancé came to church on sunday and that was the first time we met him.

J is one of our investigators for the YSA and he is incredible!!!! Some other sister met him in a park in their area and cause he is YSA they sent him over to us about 3ish weeks ago. He has already read through the Book of Mormon 1 and a 1/4 times and he understands it really well and has been reading tons of conference talks on top of that. In Sacrament meeting, one of the people mentioned in their talk that they went out with the missionaries before they were baptized and he practically ran over to us to see if he could do that too! His life is pretty rough right now and he isn’t able to be baptized until July of 2018 but he is so solid and is doing so good. We watched Joseph Smith: the Prophet of the Restoration with him and one of my favorite things he said was (referencing John 3:16) “If the Almighty Creater, God, sent His only Begotten Son to Earth, because of His love for us...why wouldn’t He reach out with love again to His children, both in person and through heavenly messengers? Why not?” Good point J. Good point... I love when investigators teach me things.

Week 76: November 6: THIS WEEK WAS SUCH A GOOD WEEK!!!

Since I didn’t get to email last week, here is a little bit of an update:

Last Monday night we had an amazing lesson with O! Every time we go over and we ask her about her reading she’s like “of course I’ve been reading! Right now I’m studying...and I love that because...” and then continues to apply the scriptures to herself. Prepared people like her just amaze me and it helps me to remember that the Lord is the one guiding this work.

After O we went to a bday party for C (a recent convert in KC1). We were only there for about 15 to 20 minutes just to drop in and wish him a happy birthday and then we rushed off to get to FHE for the YSA. We didn’t get to join in on the activity cause we were late but they carved pumpkins while we mingled haha it was seriously the best though cause Sis B took one half of the gym and I took the other and we just went to town talking to everyone. We had some prayers and concerns answered while talking to some of them too so it was seriously so great.

We did yoga with sister Webster again last Tuesday morning! I really appreciate her taking the time out of her busy schedule to do that with us. Especially because her kids got in a car accident while we were there so her husband ran off to deal with that (everyone was okay and the car wasn’t damaged bad) but she stayed home to keep teaching us. She’s awesome

We taught T finally but it was a way different lesson than we were expecting to teach haha we get there and we’re talking to him and everything and all of a sudden he starts asking us questions that pertain to the law of chastity so that was the very first lesson we taught him lol but he was way excited about all it. We have decided that somehow we are going to set him up with our other investigator O because they are literally a perfect match for each other. We’ll keep working on that and keep you posted!

Did I ever tell you guys that we are getting smart phones?? Well our mission is one of 12 that are trying out this new initiative where we all get smart phones and facebook and Skype and such. We get the phones sometime in the first week of November so that’ll be fun! Not sure exactly what I’m going to do since I never had a Facebook...I don’t really want to create an account this late in the game. We’ll see though :)

We FINALLY got in contact with C!! It was rough for a little cause work was crazy and kept switching her hours and then she is in the process of moving and everything but we just stopped by and got to talk with them while helping them pack. Literally the cutest family in the world. The kids cry every time we leave and beg for us to spend the night or at the least come over the next morning hahah

On Wednesday we had district meeting and that was really good. We talked about having the faith while making goals and plans to actually see those things come true and see miracles in our area. We had a lesson with J where we read in Mosiah 24 about how the Lord will ease the burdens that are placed on our shoulders that even we cannot feel them. I think it was an especially good reminder for me.

We had a lesson with Y and D that went way good! A huge improvement from the last lesson. We read in 2 Nephi 31 with them and referred to scriptures in the Bible to help her understand more about receiving the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands and why we don’t have the gift of the Holy Ghost until after baptism. I think it helped all of us understand it a little better!

We had the Fall Festival on Friday and that was way fun!! C and her kids, O and her kids, Y and D, C, T and her sister, and some less actives all came!

It’s so hard though when they literally all find a way to come to the fall festival but then say that they they cant go to church on Sunday.  So like nobody came to church, but oh well.

THIS WEEK:

WAS SUCH A GOOD WEEK!!! Fall has officially hit Missouri and Kansas (since we drive in and out of both everyday). It’s so beautiful to look across the sea of trees while driving down the freeway and see all of the colors you can think of! Also, I’ve had more hot cider this past month than I have had in my whole life lol AND to top off our fall celebrations, sister bench and I decided to finally carve our pumpkin and of course, we had to do something missionary related (see attached picture).

Some of you might’ve already noticed, but we got smartphones and facebook this past week - it literally was so weird to get on but I did it...i posted for the first time in my life haha. Aside from the fact that it’s going to take a lot of getting used to, this is seriously going to help the work move forward so much!!!

For Halloween night, our mission president said that we would just have to weekly plan in the apartment unless we had appointments...but guess who has the best recent converts?!? The Smith’s wanted to pass out baked goods and Book of Mormons and pass along cards and invite people to donate to different charities! And they invited us to join them. Literally THE BEST. There weren’t too many trick or treaters cause it was pretty cold, but basically everyone that did come by took one of everything. :’)

O is still on date for baptism November 18th!!:))) She came to church and when we went through the baptismal interview questions, she took it all like a champ. Last sunday, this guy named J showed up to church in the YSA and is a rockstar. Some sisters in another area met him at a park and within the past 2 weeks, he’s already read the Book of Mormon, knows that this is true and just wants to do what the Lord wants.

The other night, we had a lesson with a recent convert in the YSA named R :) She is literally the cutest. Our lesson didn’t quite go as we had planned, but that’s ok, that’s when you just roll with the punches and man, is the spirit so cool. If you “Neither take ye thought beforehand what ye shall say; but treasure up in your minds continually the words of life, and it shall be given you in the very hour that portion that shall be meted unto every man” (D&C 84:85). Towards the end of the lesson, we weren’t quite sure what to share but then a video came to mind that literally was MADE for R - and I didn’t even realize that until the moment that I was prefacing it to her. Every bit of the video hit on points she had brought up!

That same night, we went to McDonald’s to get some wifi and report on some lessons - and there was THE cutest family sitting there eating dinner. We both knew that we just had to talk to them...and they speak spanish! The Lord had placed us in the right place at the right time. I talked to the parents while Sis Bench talked to the kids haha but we exchanged numbers and now they want us to come by and share our message with them!

A quote that has stood out to me is on charity, by Marvin J Ashton. SO POWERFUL and has completely changed my perspective of what charity really means.

“​Charity​ is, perhaps, in many ways a misunderstood word. We often equate charity with visiting the sick, taking in casseroles to those in need, or sharing our excess with those who are less fortunate. But really, true charity is much, much more.

​​​​“Real charity is not something you give away; it is something that you acquire and make a part of yourself. And when the virtue of charity becomes implanted in your heart, you are never the same again. It makes the thought of [putting others down] repulsive.

​​​​​​“Perhaps the greatest charity comes when we are kind to each other, when we don’t judge or categorize someone else, when we simply give each other the benefit of the doubt or remain quiet. Charity is accepting someone’s differences, weaknesses, and shortcomings; having patience with someone who has let us down; or resisting the impulse to become offended when someone doesn’t handle something the way we might have hoped. Charity is refusing to take advantage of another’s weakness and being willing to forgive someone who has hurt us. Charity is expecting the best of each other” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1992, 24; or ​​Ensign,​ May 1992, 18–19​).

I just loved that. and I hope you do too :)

Week 75: October 30: No letter.

This week we spent time going back and forth emailing Erin as she registered for winter semester at school.  We are excited that she is returning so soon that we need to worry about classes!  She also had a friend reach out to her that had a sibling die in a car accident and Erin needed help writing the friend and she her time doing that.  She ran out of time for a weekly email but she was doing lots of good in her life and for others.

Week 74: October 23: WE’RE STAYING TOGETHER!!! (Erin will be home at next transfer!)

So lately we have been busy doing stuff on pdays and I have been trying to write longer group emails and, as a result, haven’t been able to write you individually. So...lo siento. But I’ll do my best today to get out some good emails.

After pday last week we had dinner with a member in the YSA named S and she took us to Spin! Pizza and it was way good. Their gelato was prime. After dinner we went to drop of a spanish bible and Book of Mormon to a lady in another ward who has a friend that wants to learn! He was at work though so we are going back on Wednesday night to teach him. After that we went to FHE and they built their own chariots out of cardboard and had to race around the gym, switching the person that was in the chariot ever lap. It looked way fun! We didn’t do it though cause dresses and running around don’t go super well together.

The AndersEn’s asked us to stop by on our way home so that they could give us something in preparation for transfers this past week and guess what it was.....a 25 lb bag of rice hahaha. Turns out that’s pretty much all he ate on his mission lol

We had a lesson with A on Tuesday and that went really well! We talked about the Restoration. We had a little puzzle of Jesus with us and talked about how when he came to the earth, one of the many things he did was establish His church. But, when he was crucified and his apostles were rejected, the church slowly changed and broke into a bunch of different pieces (like the different pieces of a puzzle, get it?). So people were lost and couldn’t get the whole picture but when God called Joseph Smith to be a prophet to restore the gospel, it was brought back without a missing piece. So cool and such a blessing to know. I think a lot of times we take for granted the knowledge that we have.

The past 2 lessons we stayed around for a little longer to do some crafts with A. She is super talented and cute and it has been fun to get to know her better and let share her talents with us (cause I am literally the worst at crafting).

We did service for Sister Dowling again and in return she made us apple juice and apple sauce from her juicer. Man, I want one of those things soo bad.

We had dinner with the bishop and his family and then afterwards his wife took us and M to the Historic Liberty Jail. It was seriously such a miracle that we finally got to go with her and she absolutely loved it!! She kept talking about how incredible it was to know that she was exactly where the prophet was years ago. She loved hearing about all the revelations that were received there and how it is a testament of Gods love.

Plus, sister Wimmer came in clutch on the drive home and was just like “M, we need your faith. When are you going to be baptized?” Way to go.

Oh and transfer calls came on Tuesday and WE’RE STAYING TOGETHER!!!

On the last day before transfers, we always have a zone get-together. So we met at the stake center at 8am to have a breakfast before doing studies. Super fun. I can’t believe how fast this past transfer flew by.

Even though neither of us got transferred, we still got to go to transfers cause we got a new car! Literally the best.

We finally got to actually meet with T!! He is doing awesome and actually is related to some of the members in our ward.

On Friday we got to meet with M and do some service for her! She was stressing because she has a haunted house in her basement and was supposed to open it up on Friday night but it wasn’t finished yet so we came over and helped her finish it! It was so much funnn!!!

Saturday was a little crazy because we were supposed to go to the Historic Liberty Jail with T (a recent convert) buuut we showed up to the members house and it took longer for the member to get ready so by the time we left we were already like 30 min late and then we had to go and pick up T and head to the jail and we got there with literally 15 min to spare before we had to be heading back to get to dinner on time. So we didn’t get to go on the tour but some other members from our ward had driven up with us in another car so T stayed with them and got to enjoy the tour... every day is an adventure lol.

We had a lesson with Y and D on Saturday night and that was crazy. They totally threw a curveball at us and Y told us that she doesn’t and wont believe that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith. She went on like this whole tangent about it and then didn’t come to church on sunday because she said she just felt like she wanted to be lazy. So if you could keep her in your prayers, that would be awesome.

Week 73: October 16, 2017: It was such a good week!!!

Hey Fam! So this week flew by.

Well, I already sent out pics and told you that we had a BBQ on Monday for pday but it was way fun! We all signed up to bring something and then went to a members home to grill and eat. Then we went to a nearby field where we played flag football.

Right near the end of pday, all the other missionaries had to leave except us and another set of elders so we volunteered to just go down the street to the McDonalds and finish emailing there. But guess what! There was a giant Greenwood sign right out front! So of course I took a pic with it :)

We have been thinking and praying a lot to know how we can make going to FHE have more of a purpose so we made a goal to talk with 3 new people cause we figured that since work in a YSA ward really only moves forward when you work through the members and get referrals. Well at the end of the night, one of them actually came up to us and asked us to have dinner with him and one of his non member friends! Such a huge miracle!

This week was really eventful though. On Tuesday we had MLC where a member of the 70 (Elder Echo Hawk) was there and he spoke to us and we had dinner with him and then Wednesday we got to have zone conference and hear from him, his wife, and president and sister Love. Both days were SOO GOOD!
In MLC he talked about how success is brought out by:
1. Knowing this is the work of the Savior Jesus Christ.
2. Having faith in the Lord. And letting Him become a part of me.
3. Being fiercely obedient. To the rules and to the Spirit.
4. Expecting miracles.

After MLC we went to the Websters (some members in our home ward that are so awesome) and we watched Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration with Yolanda and Daylan (some of our investigators). They loved it and Daylan was just begging to watch some more. He was like “can we do this every dayyy???” 

Then in Zone conference, one of my favorite quotes that he shared was from Elder Uchtdorf and says:

 “Faith is a principle of power. But that power

usually comes in a response to faith.

Some might say that baptisms are not determined

by the missionary because it is a moral choice that

every investigator must make. There is truth in that

statement, but there is also truth in this one: There is

a power that can cause things to happen that need

to happen. There is a spiritual force that can stir a

mortal soul toward the spiritual, motivating deeper

study into the Book of Mormon and more prayer

with real intent. Faith is a power, and it can cause

things to happen that need to happen. It can cause a

soul who is good but dormant to awaken to God."

Faith is something that everyone always talks about from like the first day in primary but I realized that it is one of those things that nobody really understands fully. It has been something that our mission president has really been pushing for us to study lately and it has been incredible. He wants us to have the faith to “see the end from the beginning”.

After zone conference we were just pumped up and ready to work. We had exchanges right after so Sister Sly and I (who I already was comps with in Kaw River) went back to KC1/Shawnee YSA to get work done. We had a lesson that night with Onna (I cant remember if I have told you about her yet) but she is incredible. We show up to the lesson and she’s like “ya, I’ve been reading! I hope you dont mind but I read a little more than you asked me to and now I’m in 1 Nephi 8”. She went on to tell us the whole story of Lehis dream and the meaning behind it and how she could apply it to her life...man, i love being a missionary. The spirit was so strong in her lesson and she is just killing it.

Not only did we have a member of the 70 come out this week but we had 2 people from SLC that came out to do a mission tour from Thursday to Monday morning. So we took out one of them with us on thursday night and she came to all of our appointments. It was so cool to have her there with us and our lessons all went so well! We met with C (who is literally incredible). She has been watching conference off of the gospel library app and reading and praying daily, plus she was reading a little extra in the gospel library app from the teachings of president hinckley and wrote a whole bunch about it and what she learned. She is doing great!

We taught A that night with J (the lady from SLC) that night too and neither her or Sis Bench speak spanish but they did their best to help me out. We taught the Gospel of Jesus Christ and had her draw pictures of each one. She said that she has been reading and praying every night! And she is literally the cutest girl. And she is extremely shy but she is totally warmed up to us now and lessons are so fun!

On Sunday one of our lessons fell through so we decided to stop by M’s (another investigator) and it was perfect! We ended up watching Joseph Smith: The Prophet of the Restoration with her as well and it was so fun to just watch her face as we watched it. She was just eating it up. And afterwards she was like “How come y’all didn’t show me this earlier!? That was so good!” She has been being taught by missionaries for over a year and finally has a testimony of the prophet Joseph smith and the Book of Mormon. She has been reading it daily and knows that its true!

Well, I think that I have written sufficient for this week even though I could go on and on. It was such a good week! I love and miss you all :)))
